Textiles
My mum taught me how to sew from a young age; she used made soft sculpture dolls for fairs. We made our own clothes and costumes regularly. My love of form guided me towards textile sculpture as a medium and with my love of fashion I am able to design and execute garments, as I am formally trained in tailoring, life drawing and costume design. My love for the environment is at the fore front of my mind when I think of fashion, encouraging slow, meaningful work.
Luna Moth Look
I made this look for some festivals I went to. The look started as some jeans I knew I wanted to alter. I found a pair of very inexpensive jeans at an op-shop while travelling. The jeans were over-sized, which was perfect for what I wanted, they just needed adjusting around the waist. I knew I wanted visible mending at the sides, and while altering it I decided to add a bunch of appliques to completely customise the jeans.
The finished jeans inspired the top. The festival headliner was Chappel Roan, and she had a luna moth look. The concept was simple; the top would bring a detailed version of the luna moth up into the focus of the look. I have been obsessed with luna moths for a while, and have made a few with fabric, meaning I have studied their wing structure before. I knew the bottom wings curl up, when straightened twisted and swirled, similar to a technique used in sewing. I wanted this effect to be a key feature of my top. I thought by adding beads to the base of the wings, I could ensure the appropriate hang to maintain the effect, I also incorporated hanging beads off other places on the moth.
Corset Top
This piece is almost completely hand sewn, designed to be a reversable corset top. I made from a pre-existing pattern.
Past Garment Construction
Apron, self-drafted. I was inspired Cottagecore and Fairytales.
A-Line Skirt, a fashion staple of mine. I made this same skirt in many different fabrics. I have also made a dress using the skirt pattern I created.
Festival Fairy Fit
Festival Outfit turned Concert Outfit. I beaded a chain belt and matching jewellery to turn this Mardi Gras outfit, I made from a thrifted scarf, into a look ready for a concert, inspired by the artist I went to see, Peach PRC during her fairycore tour.
Dress Making
Whenever I am invited to an event, especially weddings, I usually try my hand at dress making. This gives me full customisability. I especially love re-shaping dresses to by size-fluid, to ensure I have a piece that lasts with my body’s changing shape.
Tree Face
This project is a mixed media piece that I am currently working on. I am using bought and recycled textiles and recycled plastics to sculpt a dimensional tree spirit, covered in moss, mushrooms, lichen, bugs and plants on to a large canvas.
To make the face, I first sculpted it out of recycled plastics and then covered it in masking tape to create a pattern, which I then cut out of felt and stuffed with textile scraps and recycled polyester filling. The face is a very important part of this piece; I would like the audience to connect with the piece through this character. This connection will hopefully be achieved at the completion of the face, and their eyes especially. The face right now has an almost Jim Henson quality to it and evokes feelings of nostalgia to me - a theme I wish to explore further with the piece.
My intention with this piece is to deepen my exploration into creating textures from nature, both in abstract and realism. My deep love of nature propels me to create a piece that speaks for the trees and for the Earth.
I am currently creating the bark of the tree, using stripes of felt as backing, by arranging and shaping scraps of fabric to resemble the texture of trees I have seen, and hand stitching them together in sections.
I have included some of my photography of tree textures that act as my inspiration.
